Aspiration and Background

In his 41 years of service to the Catholic Church, Simon loved spending most of his time in the old church building (now demolished), making sure things were in order. This is apart from him leading the worship and prayer sessions there. Simon is one of the very few elderly in the community to not only see the initial stages of the project but helped quite a lot in many areas including fundraising drives. His aspiration was to have this project completed quickly so the people have a common place to worship God.

The project is situated in Bitakapuk Village within the Toma/Vunadidir LLG of East New New Britain Province. This project is now under construction after demolishing our old church building at the end of last year but it is in need of additional funding. It is estimated that approximately an additional K100,000.00 will be required to complete the project.

The current situation with the cocoa pod borer disease and decline in copra prices in the province has made it extremely hard for the people to raise money faster. As a result, the village people have been doing all they can with other fundraising activities to contribute resources and money form their pockets to assist and keep the project going.

A word of appreciation to those who have contributed in cash or kind towards the project so far. Thanks to Connie Tarai and the group in Perth, Western Australia; not forgetting the group in Port Moresby for your contributions.

About Us

Welcome to the proposed Simon Baining (SIBA) Foundation

Late Catechist Simon Baining (Snr)
 [1939 - 2014]
This proposed foundation is a tribute to my father; the Late Simon Baining Snr (pictured) who was very influential in his work as a catechist and teacher for the Catholic Church in many local parishes and the Archdiocese of Rabaul as a whole. He served the church for 41 years as a catechist, holding several other key positions in the archdiocese from 1968 to 2009 when he retired.

Even after his retirement, persistent as he always was, he continued his work fearlessly at the main parish level until his passing at the age of 75 in May this year (2014). He is greatly missed by those of us who knew and loved him very much but his legacy will live on, more so in the formation of this foundation.

Simon also taught as a Carpentry teacher at the then St. Joseph's Technical school, Vunapope. Some of his students at that time have now own building construction companies and private contractors. see Life story

The Cause
A new church building project is underway for our St. Leo's sub parish in the Toma/Vunadidir LLG, Gazelle District in East New Britain province, Papua New Guinea. This new building will replace a very old run-down church building that was demolished late last year, 2013 which was built back in the early seventies. Work, however, is currently on hold due to a lack of properly approved building plans and expertise by way of proper documentation beforehand and processes that followed. This implied that the initial work started have been modified by expert draftsmen and the new building plans/designs will be submitted to the provincial Building Board in due course before construction can resume. Hence a new costing will be up to be met.

Project Background

Aim
Therefore, to honour my late father who committed more than half of his life to the work of the church, I decided to form this foundation to  help raise funds for the above-mentioned cause and other similar projects in the future.

This proposal also aims to include building experts or architects to be part of the foundation to give consultation and advisory services free of charge to church building projects that the foundation is funding.

Membership
The general public is now asked to give your views on this proposal. Please drop in a post with your full name and email address so I can reply accordingly.

Formation and Registration
Plans are underway for the formation of the Board of Directors and registration. The feedback that I will get from the public, friends and relatives alike will be a great bonus.

May God bless You all!
